BIG changes to the Facebook newsfeed and what it means for your business

Posted on February 27, 2018

In case you haven’t heard, Mark Zuckerberg has made some major changes to the Facebook newsfeed algorithm. This is the largest update Facebook has seen in years and it’s directly affecting your personal and business pages.

In a nutshell, the update is prioritizing posts from friends and family and de-emphasizing posts from public content (businesses, brands, and media). Zuckerberg believed users were passively using the platform and that public content was crowding out the personal moments.

“I’m changing the goal…from focusing on helping you find relevant content to helping you have more meaningful social interactions.” – Mark Zuckerberg

Space in the news feed is already limited and now it just got a lot harder to reach your audience and be visible. Due to this update, business pages should expect to see a decrease in referral traffic and reach. It’s no longer about you – a business communicating with your audience – it’s about your audience communicating with each other. Facebook wants to emphasize communication between humans, not businesses.

The “share” button used to be the golden ticket to high engagement and page visibility – but now, comments are king. Comments are more valuable to the algorithm than any other type of engagement. Why? Because you’re much more likely to comment on something that you feel passionate about or something that is really important to you.

Let’s take a look at some strategies that we can take to address this change and still connect with our audience:

  1. Does your content spark meaningful conversations? The days of oversharing blogs, offers, and promotional content are over – instead think big weather updates, holidays, sports, etc. (steer clear of anything overly political, religious, or controversial)
  2. Is your content local? You know your community better than anyone – think fundraisers, charity events, animal shelters, etc.
  3. Are you using original photos? Ditch the google images! Snap a few photos on your phone of real-time moments – this makes all the difference.
  4. Consider a paid social strategy. When it comes to digital marketing, smart money can make all the difference.

The good news is, this update is not the end of your Facebook business page, but rather an end to your previous content strategy. Think about your audience and what is important to them, and your business page might just thrive in this algorithm update…for now.
